Bholi is a touching story by K.A. Abbas about Sulekha, a young girl who overcomes physical disfigurement, a speech impediment, and social neglect through the power of education and a compassionate teacher.
Sulekha suffers a brain injury at ten months and smallpox at two years, leaving her physically and mentally challenged. Neglected by her family, she grows up isolated and silent, constantly mocked for her stammer.
When a primary school opens in the village, Ramlal is pressured by the Tehsildar to send his daughters. Bholi is sent because her parents believe she has no future anyway. At school, a compassionate teacher encourages her to overcome her stammer and learn.
Years later, the family arranges Bholi's marriage to Bishamber, a wealthy but elderly and greedy grocer. Upon seeing Bholi's pockmarked face, Bishamber demands a hefty dowry of five thousand rupees. To save her father's honor (izzat), Ramlal pays, but Bholi courageously rejects the marriage, throwing the garland into the fire.
Bholi speaks clearly and confidently, declaring she will not marry a greedy coward. She decides to dedicate her life to serving her parents in their old age and teaching at the school that empowered her.
