In a quiet village, a rich merchant keeps a bright, talkative parrot in a golden cage. Although well-cared for, the parrot longs for freedom. When the merchant travels to a far-off land, the parrot asks him to deliver a message of greeting to its wild relatives in the forest. Upon hearing the message, one wild parrot drops seemingly dead to the ground. When the merchant returns and shares this distressing news, his pet parrot immediately mimics the action, falling to the floor of its cage. Believing it dead, the merchant places the bird on the windowsill, from where it happily flies away, having learned the trick of escape from its wise forest relative.
