Physical and Health Education: Class 11 (Part 10) — Chapter 10: Tournaments and Competitions

Introduction to Tournaments

A tournament is a competition held among different teams in a particular game or sport according to a fixed schedule where a winner is decided. Conducting a tournament requires careful consideration of factors such as the season, time of disposal, play fields, equipment, officials, and budget.

Types of Tournaments

  • Knock-out or Elimination Tournament: Teams are eliminated after a defeat (e.g., Single Knock-out, Consolation, Double Knock-out).
  • League or Round Robin Tournament: Every team plays against other teams (e.g., Single League, Double League).
  • Combination Tournament: Matches played on a group or zonal basis (e.g., Knock-out cum Knock-out, Knock-out cum League).
  • Challenge Tournament: Used for individual or dual games (e.g., Ladder, Pyramid).
Knock-out or Elimination Tournaments

In a single knock-out tournament, a team is eliminated immediately upon defeat. This format is highly efficient but can sometimes eliminate strong teams early due to chance.

Method of Drawing Fixtures

The total number of matches is calculated using the formula:

$$\text{Total Matches} = N - 1$$

Where $N$ is the total number of participating teams. If the number of teams is not a power of 2, byes are given in the first round to balance the bracket. The number of byes is determined by subtracting $N$ from the next higher power of 2.

For dividing teams into halves:

  • If $N$ is even: $$\text{Upper Half} = \frac{N}{2}$$, $$\text{Lower Half} = \frac{N}{2}$$
  • If $N$ is odd: $$\text{Upper Half} = \frac{N + 1}{2}$$, $$\text{Lower Half} = \frac{N - 1}{2}$$

For distributing byes ($N_b$) when odd:

  • $$\text{Byes in Upper Half} = \frac{N_b - 1}{2}$$
  • $$\text{Byes in Lower Half} = \frac{N_b + 1}{2}$$

Quarter Division

When the number of teams is large, they are divided into four quarters according to the following rules:

Dividend and DivisorRemainderQuarter IQuarter IIQuarter IIIQuarter IV
$N \div 4$0QQQQ
$N \div 4$1Q + 1QQQ
$N \div 4$2Q + 1QQ + 1Q
$N \div 4$3Q + 1Q + 1Q + 1Q

Where $Q$ is the quotient.

Seeding and Special Seeding

Seeding is the process of placing strong teams in the fixture so they do not meet in the early rounds. In special seeding, top-ranked players or teams play directly at the Quarter Finals or Semifinals stage.

Consolation and Double Elimination Tournaments

Consolation Tournaments give defeated teams another chance to play. In Type I, only teams defeated in their first match play. In Type II, every loser of the regular rounds gets a chance. The total matches in Type II is calculated as:

$$\text{Total Matches} = 2N - 3$$

In a Double Knock-out Tournament, a team must be defeated twice to be eliminated.

Bagnall-wild Elimination Tournament

This specialized elimination method is designed to accurately decide the true first, second, and third-place winners of a tournament.

League or Round Robin Tournaments

In a League Tournament, every team plays against every other team. In a Single League, each team plays once with every other team, whereas in a Double League, they play twice.

Match Calculations

  • Single League Matches: $$\text{Total Matches} = \frac{N(N - 1)}{2}$$
  • Double League Matches: $$\text{Total Matches} = N(N - 1)$$

Methods of Drawing Fixtures

  • Cyclic Method: One team is fixed (or a "Bye" if $N$ is odd), and other teams rotate clockwise.
  • Tabular Method: Fixtures are entered inside a grid of squares.
  • Staircase Method: Fixtures are arranged in a steps-like structure. It does not indicate rounds easily.

Deciding Winners

Winners are decided by points: Win = 2 points, Loss = 0 points, Draw = 1 point. Ties are resolved using international federation guidelines.

Combination and Challenge Tournaments

Combination Tournaments

Used for zonal or group-level matches. Common formats include:

  • Knock-out cum Knock-out
  • Knock-out cum League
  • League cum League
  • League cum Knock-out

Challenge Tournaments

Commonly used for individual sports like Badminton, Squash, and Table Tennis. They are played without a fixed schedule over a specified period.

  • Ladder Tournament: Players can challenge those immediately above them on the ladder.
  • Pyramid Tournament: A modified ladder tournament where players are arranged in a pyramid shape.
Sports Competitions

International Competitions

  • Ancient Olympic Games: Started in 776 B.C. and held every four years until terminated in 394 A.D.
