Introduction & Significance
In Indian culture, guests are regarded as God-like, encapsulated in the traditional ethos of Athithi Devo Bhava, implying that every guest must be received with warmth, care, and excellent service. Historically, travellers stayed with relatives, friends, or in traditional dharmashalas. Modern trade, commerce, and globalisation have necessitated paid hospitality services.
- Globalisation: Has transformed the world into a small place, increasing travel for business, marketing, education, pilgrimages, medical tourism, leisure, and cultural festivals.
- A Home Away From Home: The core philosophy of the hospitality industry, ensuring tourists receive comforts, safety, and hygiene comparable to their homes.
Basic Concepts & Types of Establishments
Hospitality is the relationship between the guest and the host, involving the friendly, generous reception, entertainment, and provision of services with warmth and courtesy.
- Hotel: A commercial establishment offering lodging, meals, and other guest services.
- Motel: Provides services similar to a hotel, featuring parking facilities near the rooms or room doors opening directly onto the parking lot.
- Lodge: Offers rented accommodation primarily for sleeping, often without food and other services.
- Resort: Known for leisure attractions, offering a broad range of amenities, sports facilities, and activities for a complete vacation experience.
- Furnished Apartments: Provide all essential household amenities needed for short or long-term guest stays.
- Furnished Camps: Provide hospitality services to people engaged in hiking, adventure sports, and outdoor activities.
The hospitality industry is divided into five major sectors: Tourism, Food & Beverage Service, Accommodation (Front Office), Meetings & Events, and Entertainment & Recreation.
The Guest Cycle
The Guest Cycle represents the systematic stages of interaction between a guest and a hospitality establishment, starting before physical arrival and extending beyond departure.
- Pre-arrival Stage: Activities include quoting room rates and reserving rooms through a central reservation system.
- Arrival Stage: The guest physically arrives, registers, and checks-in.
- Occupancy Stage: Provision of various services, coordination of guest requirements, and ensuring security to build customer loyalty.
- Departure Stage: The final stage where the guest checks out, settles bills, and the hotel updates the guest history record along with feedback.
