Mathematics: Class 1 — Chapter 3: Mango Treat

3.1 Let us Read — Mango Treat

A delightful story introducing the concept of sequential counting from $1$ to $9$ as different birds join a squirrel to share a mango.

Let us Talk

Discussion questions to build number sense:

  • A. Identify the birds in the picture.
  • B. How many animals or birds were eating the mango in the beginning?
  • C. How many more animals or birds joined every time?
  • D. What is $1$ more than $1$, $1$ more than $2$ ... up to $9$?
  • E. How many animals and birds ate the mango at the end?
3.2 Matching and Playing with Numbers

Interactive activities to map physical representations (fingers, dots) to numerical values.

Match and Mime Activities

  • Match Birds with Fingers: Counting birds on branches and matching them to the corresponding number of raised fingers.
  • Match Fingers with Dots: Associating finger patterns with groups of colored dots.
  • Mime with Fingers: A partner game where children show a number (e.g., $3$) in different finger combinations.

Let us Play Outside

A group game where children move in a circle holding hands. When a number is called out (e.g., four), children must quickly form groups of that size. Left-out children count the members of each group.

3.3 Comparing Quantities (More, Less, Equal)

Developing foundational skills in quantitative comparison.

My Drawing Day (Ekta Diwas)

An activity based on a drawing event held on Ekta Diwas (31st October). Children compare drawing materials to the number of children using three categories:

  • More than the number of children
  • Less than the number of children
  • Same as (equal to) the number of children

Let us Do & Finger Game

  • Exercises to identify and tick groups containing more or less items (e.g., comparing apples to bananas, rotis to idlis, children to playballs).
  • Finger Game: One player shows a set of fingers (e.g., $4$), and the partner must show fewer or more fingers.
3.4 Numbers 1, 2, 3... Go!

Writing practice and object identification for numbers $1$ through $9$.

3.5 Number Exercises and Activities

Practice tasks to reinforce counting, ordering, and grouping.

Ordering and Missing Numbers

  • Join the Numbers in Order: Draw a path from $1$ to $9$ sequentially without crossing lines.
  • Ordering Cards: Arrange shuffled number cards from the smallest to the largest.
  • Missing Numbers: Fill in missing sequences on the floor (e.g., $\_, 5, 6, \_, 8$ or $5, \_, \_, \_, 9$).
  • Colour the Biggest Number: Identify and color the largest numeral among a given set.

Counting and Grouping Tasks

  • Count and write the number of yellow boxes, jamuns, and sheep in given illustrations.
  • Group Combinations: Identify which two groups of items together sum up to a target number (e.g., finding groups that make $8$ fruits or $7$ umbrellas).
  • Project Work: Create personalized number cards from $1$ to $9$ using colored paper and matching stickers/drawings.
