Social Sciences: Class 3 — Chapter 8: Food We Eat

8.1 My Favourite Food

We all like to eat and drink different things. Some of these food items are sweet, some are sour, some are spicy, and some are bitter. We eat fruits, vegetables, rice, dal, or roti. We drink milk, lassi, or juice.

Chhappan Bhog

Chhappan bhog is a special food prepared on festivals and auspicious occasions in honour of guests, friends, and family. It contains 56 varieties of food items representing a harmonious blend of six tastes:

  • Sweet (meetha)
  • Spicy (teekha)
  • Astringent (kasaila)
  • Sour (khatta)
  • Salty (namkeen)
  • Bitter (karva)
8.2 Story of Shirin — the Runner

Shirin was in Class 3 and used to run very fast. However, she often fell sick. When she asked a champion runner how to run like her and win medals, the champion asked about her diet. Shirin revealed she only liked to eat rice and potatoes.

The Champion's Advice

The champion advised Shirin that to have a strong and healthy body, she must eat a variety of foods:

  • Eat different kinds of vegetables and fruits.
  • Eat things made from different kinds of grains, like rice, ragi, jowar, wheat, and bajra.
  • Eat pulses (dal) and nuts.
  • Eat food cooked at home.

Shirin followed this advice, understood the value of a balanced diet, and soon felt energetic, healthy, and won a medal for her school.

8.3 We Eat Different Things

Elders in our family cook different foods during summer and winter. We get different fruits and vegetables in different seasons.

Summer Drinks

During the summer, the weather is hot and we sweat a lot, losing water from our body. To stay hydrated, we should drink water frequently and consume drinks like:

  • Tender Coconut Water
  • Mango Juice
  • Aam Panna
  • Orange Juice
  • Lime Water (nimbu pani)
  • Sugarcane juice
  • Buttermilk

Our body needs a lot of water. We cannot live without water, which is why we say, 'water is life'.

8.4 Where Does Food Come From?

We get our food from both plants and animals.

Parts of Plants We Eat

  • Leaves: Spinach (Palak), Fenugreek (Methi), Cabbage, Mustard, Coriander (Dhaniya).
