Social Sciences: Class 3 — Chapter 9: Staying Healthy and Happy

9.1 Introduction to Health and Happiness

To keep our bodies and minds working properly, we must maintain good health. Developing simple daily habits helps keep our bodies clean, free from diseases, and keeps us happy.

9.2 Personal Hygiene and Daily Routines

Clean and Bright

Ask yourself these daily hygiene questions:

  • Did I brush my teeth today?
  • Did I take a shower?
  • Did I comb my hair?
  • Did I wash my hands with soap?
  • Are my nails trimmed and clean?

Daily Routine Checklist

A healthy daily routine should include the following essential activities:

  • Taking a shower
  • Washing hands with soap (especially after using the toilet and coming home from outdoors)
  • Brushing teeth twice a day (once after waking up and once before going to bed)
  • Rinsing the mouth after eating food
  • Drinking 6–8 glasses of water
  • Eating nutritious food
  • Sleeping well for at least 8 hours
  • Playing outside
9.3 Traditional Hygiene and Cleaning Methods

How do we Brush our Teeth?

Traditionally, people used fresh twigs from neem or babool trees to clean their teeth. This traditional practice is called datun. Chewing the twig makes it like a brush, removing food particles and massaging the gums.

The modern idea of brushing teeth originated from this Indian hygiene tradition of using natural twigs.

Natural Cleaning Alternatives

  • Hair Care: Traditional natural alternatives like Reetha or Shikakai are used for washing hair.
  • Household Cleaning: Eco-friendly cleaners can be made at home using natural ingredients.

Activity: Making an Eco-Friendly Home-Cleaner

Ingredients needed:

  • Peels of 8–12 oranges or lemons
  • Ten whole cloves (laung) or 2–3 bay leaves (tejpatta) (optional)
  • Two cups of white vinegar

Instructions: Put all ingredients in a half-litre transparent container, close the lid, and keep it in a sunny area for about two weeks (shake occasionally). Strain the liquid to get an all-purpose cleaner. Mix one cup of this liquid in a bucket of water to clean floors and bathrooms.

9.4 Hygiene in the Animal Kingdom

Animals also practice self-cleaning and grooming to stay healthy:

9.5 Physical Exercise and Play

Benefits of Exercise

When we run or play active games, we breathe faster and deeper, feel warm, and sweat. This happens because exercise makes our heart work harder and better, which is excellent for physical fitness.

The body requires three main types of exercises:

  • Strengthening the cardio-respiratory system
  • Adding strength to muscles and bones
  • Maintaining or enhancing body flexibility

Games and Activities

Playing active games keeps both the mind and body active. Examples of games include:

  • Outdoor/Active Games: Skipping rope, Hopscotch, Football, Cricket, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Basketball, Badminton, Tennis, Volleyball.
  • Indoor/Mind Games: Chess, Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Carrom.
9.6 Safety Rules

Playing Safely

It is important to choose safe areas for playing to avoid injuries:

  • Safe Areas: Parks, schoolgrounds.
  • Unsafe Areas: Busy roads, construction sites, roofs without railings.

Stranger Safety

In public spaces, children must follow safety rules regarding strangers:

  • Do not interact with strangers unless accompanied by parents or a trusted adult.
  • Do not accept sweets, food, or gifts from strangers.
  • Do not go anywhere or get into a vehicle with a stranger.
  • Always pay attention to your surroundings when playing.
9.7 Reflection and Self-Assessment

Weekly Health Tracker

Track your daily habits (brushing twice, using the toilet, taking a shower, sleep duration, breakfast, screen time, outdoor play) and note how they affect your feelings (Good, okay, not so good, bad) to find patterns between sleep, diet, exercise, and well-being.

The 24-Hour Activity Circle

Draw a circle and divide it into 24 equal slices (each representing one hour of the day). Colour the slices based on the hours spent on different activities (sleeping, eating, studying, playing, helping parents, watching TV, using the toilet, etc.) to visualize your daily time management.
