Social Sciences: Class 4 — Chapter 6: Happy and Healthy Living

6.1 Introduction to Happy Living

All of us feel happy at different times and for different reasons. One major source of happiness is eating our favourite foods, which are made from various grains, pulses, and vegetables.

6.2 Journey of the Grains

The journey of a grain (like rice or wheat) from the farm to our plate is long and involves many elements and people working together.

Key Elements in the Journey

  • Natural Elements: Soil, Water, and Sunlight play crucial roles in helping seeds grow.
  • Animals: Cattle (for manure and farming assistance) and Earthworms (to keep soil fertile).
  • People: Farmers (sowing, watering, harvesting), Shopkeepers (selling), and Family members (cooking and serving).
6.3 Gratitude and Cultural Festivals

Remembering all contributors with love and gratitude helps us appreciate the importance of each grain. In India, several festivals celebrate and show gratitude to 'Mother Nature' for the food we eat:

6.4 Mindful Eating

Mindful Eating is about paying attention to what we eat and how we feel while eating.

Steps for Mindful Eating

  1. Put the food item in your mouth slowly.
  2. Use your tongue and mouth to feel the surface of the food.
  3. Gently chew it with your teeth.
  4. Feel the flavour and taste using your tongue, nose, and other senses.
  5. Remember the taste as you continue to chew.
  6. Before swallowing, remember the texture of the food.

Benefits of Mindful Eating

  • Helps us enjoy our food better.
  • Helps us make healthier choices.
  • Teaches us to appreciate the food we have.
6.5 Valuing Food

Every grain of food is precious. When we waste food, we fail to respect the hard work of everyone who helped bring that food to our plate.

6.6 Exercise, Sports, and Sleep

Along with good food, physical activity and rest are essential to stay healthy and happy.

Physical Activities and Yoga

Regular physical activities like playing in open fields, running, jumping, cycling, and skipping keep us strong and energetic. Practicing Yoga improves our posture and keeps us happy and active.

The Importance of Sleep

Our body requires sufficient sleep every day. A good sleep takes away tiredness, makes us feel fresh, and helps us focus on work or play. Lack of sleep can make us feel tired, sleepy, and irritable.

6.7 Feeling Safe: Safe and Unsafe Touch

To live a happy and healthy life, it is important to feel safe and understand the difference between safe and unsafe touch.

Safe Touch vs. Unsafe Touch

  • Safe Touch: A comforting touch (like a hug from a parent or family member) that makes you feel happy, safe, and comfortable.
  • Unsafe Touch: Any touch that makes you feel uneasy, scared, confused, or uncomfortable, whether it comes from someone you know or a stranger.

What to Do If You Feel Unsafe

If anyone ever makes you feel uncomfortable, remember that it is okay to say 'No' firmly and tell a trusted adult, such as your parents or teacher. You do not have to feel guilty or uncomfortable.
