Social Sciences: Class 5 — Chapter 4: Our School—A Happy Place
4.1 Green School
A school is a place where we feel safe, cared for, and where we learn many things. A Green School is defined as a school where we manage our waste, save water, use electricity carefully, and make the campus green by planting more trees and taking care of them.
4.1.1 Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya
Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya (Clean India Clean Schools) is a part of the Swachh Bharat Mission started by the Government of India. It focuses on keeping schools clean and healthy for all, including:
- Clean toilets
- Safe drinking water
- Proper waste management
- Hygiene education
Every child has the right to study in a clean and safe environment!
4.1.2 Activity 1: School Mapping
Walk around your school and create its map. Include key features such as:
- Main building and pathways
- Playground and garden
- Water tanks and school gate
4.2 Be a School Explorer!
Students can form School Explorer Teams to observe and improve different aspects of the school environment:
- Water Watchers: Monitor leaking taps, water wastage, cleanliness of water tanks, and potential mosquito breeding sites.
- Electricity Savers: Check if lights and fans are left on unnecessarily, promote the use of natural light, and identify the hottest/coolest areas.
- Waste Warriors: Locate litter, check the availability and usage of dustbins, and ensure segregation of food and other waste.
- Green Guardians: Care for trees and plants, identify planting areas, observe birds/butterflies, and manage compost pits.
- Traffic Trackers: Observe traffic outside the school gate during arrival/exit, check for pedestrian crossings, and monitor vehicle speeds.
4.3 Waste Management
We can reduce waste by using only what we need, reusing things, and not throwing away useful items. Separating waste into dry and wet categories helps manage it better and keeps our surroundings clean.
4.3.1 Waste Segregation
- Dry Waste: Collected in blue bins (e.g., paper, plastic bottles, cardboard, metal).
- Wet Waste: Collected in green bins (e.g., food peels, leftovers, organic waste).
- Recyclable Items: Items like old newspapers, glass, and metals are often kept aside for traditional recyclers.
4.3.2 Activity 2: Segregation Game
Create paper chits of different items (banana peels, plastic bottles, broken glass, cardboard boxes, etc.) and practice sorting them into three boxes: Green (wet waste), Blue (dry waste), and Items for Recycler.
4.4 Let Us be Cool!
Different factors affect the temperature of classrooms and buildings:
- Shade and Ventilation: Trees providing shade and windows allowing breeze keep rooms cool.
- Surface Color: A white roof reflects the Sun's heat and keeps the building cool, whereas a black surface absorbs heat.
4.4.1 Activity 3: Heat Absorption Experiment
Paint one tile/stone black and another white. Place them under the Sun. After some time, touch them to feel the difference in temperature. The white tile will feel cooler because it reflects heat.
4.5 Dripping Water
Water is a precious treasure. Even a small leak can waste a significant amount of water over time.
4.5.1 Activity 4: Measuring Water Waste
Collect dripping water from a tap or a poked bottle in a glass and measure the time taken to fill it. Calculate how many glasses of water would be wasted in a single day.
4.5.2 Jal Shakti Abhiyan
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan is a national campaign to save and protect water. It encourages planting trees, catching rainwater, fixing leaks, and using water wisely.
4.6 Greenery Around Us
Trees are home to many living beings. They keep the air clean, provide shade and food to birds and insects, and help keep the surroundings cool.
4.6.1 Activity 5: Temperature Under a Tree
Measure and compare the temperature of a glass of water kept under a tree versus one kept under the direct Sun for one hour. The water under the tree remains cooler due to shade and transpiration.
4.7 Traffic Signs & Safety
Many accidents happen on the roads because people do not follow traffic rules. It is vital to know and follow traffic rules to ensure safety around the school gate.
- Signboards: Designing clear signboards for the school gate helps convey safety messages to drivers, parents, and students.
4.8 Fire Safety
Being prepared for emergencies like fires helps everyone stay safe and confident.
4.8.1 Safe Fire Drill Steps
- Move quickly and calmly to the nearest exit route. Do not panic or run.
- Crawl low under smoke with your mouth covered to breathe cleaner air.
- Do not hide in closets or bathrooms.
- Help others if safe to do so, but never return to the building once outside.
- Go to the designated assembly point and stay with your group.
- Alert staff or teachers immediately if anyone is missing or injured.
4.9 What We Do Matters!
Our behavior at school, home, and public places affects everyone. Respect and kindness are shown through actions such as waiting for our turn, using kind words, helping others, and keeping our environment clean.
4.9.1 Activity 6: Analyzing Everyday Situations
Discuss how to handle situations such as:
- Students skipping lines at the water tap.
- Scribbling on classroom benches.
- Littering in the playground.
- Teasing or bullying other students.
- Making noise and disturbing others in public parks.
4.10 Let Us Reflect
Review and apply the concepts learned in this chapter:
- Happiness Tree: Draw a tree and add leaves with small positive actions written on them.
- Perspective Writing: Imagine a day in school from the viewpoint of a student in a wheelchair, a student speaking a different language, or a school sanitation worker.
- Role-Play: Act out scenarios showing kindness, solving water wastage, or helping a classmate feel included.
